AIChE Regional Meeting

Kansas State University's AIChE student chapter will host the 2016 Mid-America Student Regional Conference, April 1 - 3. This event invites students from 12 surrounding universities as well as faculty, alumni and industry members. More than 300 people are expected to attend.

This conference is intended for chemical engineering students to network and share ideas, through research papers and poster presentations.

A highlight of the meeting will be the ChemE Car Design Team competition — a contest between students who design and develop model cars propelled by chemical reactions. The object of the competition is to see which car can travel a specific distance carrying a certain amount of weight. Neither distance nor weight are specified until the day of the competition. The winner will go on to compete at the national level, in San Francisco, California next November.

The ChemE Jeopardy competition is also a fun way for students to test their knowledge in chemical engineering as well as biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and other engineering disciplines.

There will also be a small career fair with chemical industry representatives for students to visit with.

The final event is a closing banquet featuring the conference’s keynote speaker, Tim Taylor, president of Phillips 66 and a K-State chemical engineering alumnus. He will be speak on “The Evolution of the Petroleum Industry.”

For the regional conference, the AIChE chapter has reached out to the department of hospitality management on campus to help plan the event. Fifteen students from its capstone class, Event Management, have formed three groups — marketing, operations and sponsorship — to help the event come to life.

“Their expertise has been invaluable,” said AIChE chapter president, David Madden. “It has been a pleasure to collaborate with their department. Even though events such as these require much effort and participation, it helps bring together schools, faculty, and alumni, and gives the department a chance to showcase K-State and the department.”
