Professional experience
Liu received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 2003 from the Dalian University of Technology in China. He earned his doctorate in chemical engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in 2008, and then researched surface kinetics modeling there from January to December 2009. His postdoc experience also included modeling of biomass conversions at the Argonne National Lab from January of 2010 to December of 2012 and solid alloy thermodynamics at Carnegie Mellon University from January to July 2013. Liu came to K-State as an assistant professor in 2013.
Research
Liu's research focuses on various areas of computational catalysis with the goal to advance fundamental knowledge for catalyst development and catalytic process innovation. Using first-principles-based methods (i.e. density functional theory) as the computational engine, he focuses on building a cascade of molecular-level modeling system, encompassing mechanistic investigation, catalytic trends based catalyst screening and first-principles-based kinetic modelings. These research efforts will significantly accelerate the trial-and-error catalyst development approach for catalytic process innovation.
Academic highlights
Liu received the K-State Faculty Mentoring Fellowship in 2014, the Academic Excellence Award in 2015, the K-State Faculty Development Award in 2016 and the College of Engineering Outstanding Tenure-track Assistant Professor Award in 2016.
